Lydia holds a Diploma in Swedish aroma theraphy.

Instead of just one- off affair, she made arrangement for anyone interested to carry on with the basic skill acquired to benefit the inmates in St. Joseph Home at Jurong West, as most of them are in their 70’s and 80’s, are wheelchair bound. In this way what you have learned is not wasted.

Each inmate you spent about 15 to 20 minutes and while doing the massaging you also can do evangelization.

Home visit is once a month, usually first Sunday, between 2 pm to 4 pm.

Regular netters are from N-17 Lydia Chung, Augustine Lioe and Thomas Yeo and N-18

Miguel Manuzon. During Christmas break they give themselves a treat.

The purpose of the outreach was to visit thepoor and needy elderly folks residing at North Bridge Road. There were about

33 people comprising of NETters and members from the Church of Sts. Peter & Paul,

St. Vincent de Paul Ministry to do this outreach. Prior to the aforesaid visit,

preparations were done like practicing the ‘carols’ in class on 15th Dec. Thurs,

making the “Greeting Cards” for the elderly folks which were done by Sidney Kwok/NET20. etc.

It was an unforgettable day filled with shower of blessings from the Lord as it was pouring

with rain heavily. We needed to visit 16 FINS (i.e. Friends in need) and three groups were

formed so as to reach out to more FINS. Before setting off, we said a short prayer together

and then went to do our carolling at the homes of the elderly folks. Amazingly, NET is

blessed with singing talent as this batch of NET20 participants are great ‘singers’. They

sang the songs beautifully in English and Mandarin as most of the elderly folks were

Mandarin speaking. We have some Indonesians/NET20 and Filipinos/NET20 who even made the

extra efforts to learn to say the prayers and sang the songs in Mandarin with the help

of Hanyun Pinyin/Romanized English. Gifts like buns, bread, rosary, evangelization

prayer cards, greeting cards (made in a form of a heart shape) and leaflets on

“What Christmas means to me?” were distributed to the elderly folks as

a form of evangelization.

Below are some of the heart-warming sharing from the NET 20:

(1)

It was a spiritually enriching and emotional experience for me.

I think it is the same for all who were there, the rain

didn’t dampen our spirits.

(2)

I have learnt that it takes so little

to bring some joy and love to the folks who live alone. The best

moment for me was to witness how our singing was able to move

someone to tears. That moment will always remain in my heart.

God has touched him. Praise the Lord.

(3)

The program helps us to understand how we can bring our love to the folks.

It helps them to be active, feel sense of belonging and be joyful.

(4)

God’s love is with them, seeing them cheerful and healthy.

We thank God’s grace for what I have and hope. We could extend to the needy people.

(5)

A very enriching experience. Brings out the humility in us.

We share our joy and love with the homes we visited. Very rewarding to our souls. Thank you.

(6)

All the elderly were friendly. All of us give them the joy and lové.

Some of them were very loving. We must share Jesus with them.

(7)

Obtained the feeling of joy when we see the elderly expressing their joy. Practical,

meaningful and spiritual growth to all.

(8)

We can help to clean the homes for the elderly.

(9)

We need more helpers as there are so many folks we can visit.

(10)

Touched by the people we visited. Realised that there are much work

to be done and few workers.

Last but not least, the NET Outreach Team together with NET 20 participants

will re-visit these elderly folks during Lent in April 2012 as it is a

period of alms giving, charity and sacrifices. Tentative plan is to help

to do ‘spring’ cleaning their homes. So… NETters if you are available

during Lent, please offer your service to these needy people for the love

of Christ. Much appreciated your kind help and service in advance!

Some gems from three great lay persons on evangelization.

Mr Terry Barber has over 30 years of evangelization experience said: “If we don’t evangelize, we will fossilize. We must remember to share our faith or we will lose it.”

He is convinced that once you let God fill you with FIRE and DESIRE, you will be “evangelizing without even trying.”

“There are two sides to the Church’s entire mission: evangelization and the establishment of the Church to lead people to Christ .”

Dr Scott Hahn has said that Evangelism is not complete until the evangelized become evangelists.

Ms Terry A Mordica of the Good News Ministry writes: “We are evangelizers every time we reveal Jesus to others. And how do we do that in our world today? First, we have to let others know that we are followers of Jesus. This can be done very gently, casually, and briefly.

“Then, we have to prove that Jesus is real and worth following. This is done through the way we live, the way we respond to hardships, and the way we love even the most difficult troublemakers. And it is done by discerning, with the help of the Holy Spirit, what to do and what not to do as challenges arise.”

We are reminded again that prayer is not just one-way communication with God as we need to listen attentively to His Words from our hearts. At all times, we should try to set up a private space for God physically (Ideally during our prayer time, have a small cross, bible and a lit candle in your room.) and spiritually. The day of recollection allows to reflect who is Christ in our life.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — The Vatican and other Christian representatives have
issued a series of recommendations for evangelization in multifaith
societies, rejecting aggressive or coercive methods but defending the right
to profess, propagate or change one’s religion.

The principles were outlined June 28 in a document titled, “Christian
Witness in a Multi-Religious World: Recommendations for Conduct,” issued
jointly by the Pontifical Council for the Interreligious Dialogue, the World
Council of Churches and the World Evangelical Alliance.

“Christian witness in a pluralistic world includes engaging in dialogue with
people of different religions and cultures,” the document said. It added
that while every Christian has the duty to witness to Christ, “conversion is
ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit.”

“If Christians engage in inappropriate methods of exercising mission by
resorting to deception and coercive means, they betray the Gospel and may
cause suffering to others,” it said.

The document was the product of five years of consultations by some 40
experts in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. Cardinal Jean-Louis
Tauran, the head of the Vatican’s interreligious council, said defining the
principles was “not easy” but that the final text was important and should
now be studied by Christian communities around the world.

“It’s very important that religions, especially Christianity, appear not as
a source of division but a source of solidarity and communion,” he told
Vatican Radio. An essential point, he said, was that witnessing the Gospel
cannot be an “aggressive campaign.”

The document strongly emphasized that exploitation of situations of poverty
and need has no place in Christian outreach.

While education, health care, relief services and advocacy of justice are an
integral part of witnessing to the Gospel, it said that “Christians should
denounce and refrain from offering all forms of allurements, including
financial incentives and rewards, in their acts of service.”

Among the document’s 12 major principles for evangelizing were the following
points:

– In all aspects of life and witness, Christians are called to follow the
example and teachings of Jesus Christ.

– Christians are called to conduct themselves with integrity, charity,
compassion and humility and to “overcome all arrogance, condescension and
disparagement.”

– Christian healing ministries should be carried out with discernment,
“ensuring that the vulnerability of people and their need for healing are
not exploited.”

– Christians are called on to reject all forms of violence or the abuse of
power in their witness. They should also reject any form of violence or
discrimination by any religious or secular authority.

– Religious freedom is an essential human freedom and includes the right to
“publicly profess, practice, propagate and change one’s religion.” Where
religious persecution occurs, Christians are called to engage in prophetic
witness denouncing such actions.

– Changing one’s religion is a decisive step that requires sufficient time
for reflection and preparation.

– Christians should be careful to acknowledge what is good in other beliefs
and not to “bear false witness concerning other religions.”

The drafters of the document said the text should now be studied by
churches, national and regional church structures and mission organizations,
especially those working in interreligious contexts.

They said those organizations should encourage Christians to strengthen
their own identity but avoid misrepresenting the beliefs and practices of
people of different faiths and should call on governments to ensure that
freedom of religion is respected.

It was indeed a very memorable, wonderful and loving experience for me to run the N20 EE at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament last week end, 23rd and 24th July 2011. It reminded me of the beautiful story “The Footprints” whereby our loving and gracious Lord was carrying me very closely in his arms throughout my ups and downs….

First of all, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to my big sister and mentor, Josephine Lee/N14 who is like a ‘rolling ball’. Ahem… She is really really a ‘true blue’ NETter! She started her labour of love by roping in for help from very senior NETters who are staying in the west district to help out at the N20 EE at BSC last weekend. Mistakenly, she contacted Joseph Lee/N3 who lives near ‘Anchorvale‘ but in actual fact Anchorvale is located somewhere in Sengkang…. not in the west district. Josephine happily chatted with Joseph’s mother and was told that he is married and has moved to Stjrling Road, west district. Wow! The power of the Holy Spirit can really move us to do wonders beyond our imagination and comprehension. To our surprises, Joseph/N3 not only turned up at BSC on 23rd July Saturday evening to help us, he is also most willing to offer his service for the Lord to be more involved with NET activities. Yep! Joseph will be helping out at Sts. Peter & Paul Church for the N20 EE on 6th and 7th Aug. Praise the Lord!

Towards the end of day on 23rd July. after the sunset Mass, Josephine quietly said to me… “Clare, we will be having 3-4 of us to run the show tomorrow. How? But, I have contacted a few other senior NETters and hopefully, they will turn up.” My earthly thoughts were ‘huh? huh? huh?’ Well, that night I almost wanted to contact other senior NETters for help too. After all, the Holy Spirit had sent my good helpers like James/N16, Thomas/N17 and Elizabeth/N13, Peggy/N16, Audrey/N19, Catherine/N19 and Daniel/N19 to help out at St. Bernadette as labourers were also few there.. I truly believe that whoever the Lord has sent them away from us, he will replace them with others. My faith kept me going on that night… I prayed and said to the Lord, “I leave everything to you at the foot of your cross, Lord. Amen.” Slept right through… :0)

24th July was the best day of my life so far this year…. It was a day of friendship, hope, love and faith for me…. Jesus brought another fellow NETter, Dora/N10 to help us on 24th July, Sunday (whom Josephine contacted). Praise the Lord! Dora is from the Church of St. Teresa and she is a gentle and soft-spoken lady… so… very unlike me… :0) Here again, the power of the Holy Spirit amazes me in his ‘soft’ approaches for me always! Be gentle and gracious! :0) I also came to know from Dora that we have 5 NETters from St. Teresa whom she still in contact at times. I have truly learnt from this N20 EE that it brings about loving fellowship and strong unity among NETters as Christ has actually laid His path for us to meet up with our senior NETters whom we have lost in touch for ages. Let’s remind ourselves constantly (through the power of the Holy Spirit) to keep vigil and tap the talents and resources of our NETters in the near future for all NET activities. Hmm… God is good all the time too… Jean/N17 runs a book shop at BSC and Jo. & I have entrusted Jean to continue her ‘fishing’ assignment at BSC until School starts on 6th Oct. 2011. After the morning Masses, Jo. and I had nothing much to do except eating, drinking and lazing around at the shopping mall. Both of us even dropped by at James’ home, which is quite near BSC, for a chat. Jenny and Lawrence came to pick us up at James’ place at about 4.50pm and we proceeded back to BSC to carry out our work for Christ and caught 44 fishes over the week end.

Last but not least, with a grateful heart, I would like to say a zillion thanks to Josephine/N14, Jenny/N15, Lawrence/N15, Jean/N17, Dora/N10 and Joseph/N3 but more importantly, to CHRIST for his tender loving care and help. It was indeed an enjoyable and fun-filled week end at BSC for Christ was at work with me. Without Him, I am nothing as He makes all things possible for all of us. Amen.

God bless!
Clare Chan/N15
NET Secretary
N20 Enrollment Ex. Coordinator
26th July 2011
