The Church was founded to spread Christ’s kingdom through the world, to save all men and thus focus the whole world on Christ. All activity to bring this about is called the apostolate, and every Christian is called to play his part in it, for to be a Christian also means to be an apostle, It is precisely in the midst of the world that lay people must be apostles. Full of the spirit of Christ, they must bear witness to him and help all men to salvation. (Christifidelse Laici)
Evangelization is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize, that is to say, in order to preach and teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God … (Evangelii Nuntiandi)
With these two church documents ringing in their ears, a small group of Catholics, religious and laity, after deep reflections and discernment, set up a School of Evangelization (New Evangelization Team) in 1986 to offer holistic formation to Catholics so that they are better equipped to evangelize.
Proclamation is the permanent priority of mission. Evangelization will always contain – as the foundation, centre and at the same time the summit of its dynamism – a clear proclamation that, in Jesus Christ … salvation is offered to all people, as a gift of God’s grace and mercy. All forms of missionary activity are directed to this proclamation … (Redemptoris Missio)
The 19th School of Evangelization ends May 2011.
“And how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can tey believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the Good News!’” (Romans 10:14-15)
